The Making of a Music Video- 'Dreaming With You'

I always try my best to look for the silver lining in any situation so when the pandemic shut everything down, including music venues I was playing at, I knew I had to have another outlet. I'm usually apprehensive about putting myself "out there" on the internet due to fear of judgment, but making a long desired video for Dia de los Muertos helped me overcome any inadequate feelings I previously had. Even though I didn't really know what I was doing; I had a camera, a song, an outfit, and most importantly- moxie. I was pleased with the results because I had done it all myself, including the final editing. It wasn't perfect, but it was emotionally raw, and it was me. That started me on a fun and exciting path of conceptualizing music videos to my songs.

I am now on my fourth video, which will be my third single release, called Dreaming with You. This was months in the planning due to moving and remodeling a warehouse, but I always believe in divine timing- and this was it. I wanted underwater and overhead shots of me and Nick (boyfriend) in prom attire dancing in a swimming pool. I also wanted a white bed scene, shot from above where I am singing into the camera. The rest of the video was improvised, and I love that because it allows room for creativity and exploration.

This video took us two nights to shoot and two days to edit. It cost us almost nothing to make, due to our resourcefulness. The video came out better than I had imagined, and I had a blast making it! I encourage anyone who is thinking of making a video to get creative with any camera you have, like your phone, and just set a date and start.

Tip: A little planning helps, like writing down specific scenes, or outfits, or locations, and having a decent portable speaker to play the audio. If you want to get smoother shots then I suggest a gimbal for your camera or phone. Lastly, shoot at least a few takes and review your material before moving on. You will thank yourself during the editing process. I'm sure there are a ton of YouTube videos and resources out there about making a music videos (none that I have watched), but if you understand the concept just go for it.

Happy Creating!
